RETREATS

Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors offers Veterans a dynamic path to recovery and healing through the power of ocean and wind-driven sports. Our retreats, hosted across the East Coast in the OuterBanks NC, Charleston SC, Saint Simons GA, and the Gulf Coast FL introduce Veterans to wind and water sports like kiteboarding, sailing, wakesurfing, foiling, e-foiling and more. These sports not only challenge the body but also calm the mind, helping Veterans rebuild confidence, focus, and resilience. By learning new skills on the water and sharing the experience with veteran peers who understand their journey, beneficiaries find both healing and a renewed sense of community.

KITEBOARDING

fly. thrive. yew.

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world. It blends elements of surfing, sailing, paragliding, and windsurfing into a dynamic and exhilarating experience. The sport’s modern form traces back to the 1980s when the Legaignoux brothers from France developed an inflatable kite design that made the sport safer and more accessible. Since then, kiteboarding has exploded across the globe, with an estimated 1.5 million riders today, gliding on oceans, lakes, rivers, and even snow.

The sport reached a major milestone when it was added to the Olympic Games in 2024, with the Formula Kite class making its debut. Riders in these events harness hydrofoil boards and high-performance kites to skim across the water at incredible speeds, sometimes nearing 80 km/h. What began as a fringe sport has now become a global community, united by a passion for wind, water, and freedom.

Kiteboarding offers a complete workout, engaging strength, balance, coordination, and endurance, while also demanding mental focus and mindfulness. Riders must tune into the wind, waves, and their own body with every movement, creating an experience that quiets the mind and sharpens awareness. Many find that it not only relieves stress but also builds confidence as they learn new skills and overcome fears. Just as powerful is the community surrounding the sport. A worldwide network of riders who encourage, support, and celebrate one another.

For Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors, kiteboarding is not just a sport, it is a pathway to healing and renewal. The physical challenges of balancing on the board, steering the kite, and riding the waves help Veterans strengthen their bodies, improve mobility, and regain physical confidence. Each session on the water becomes both a workout and a form of therapy, engaging muscles and movement patterns that support recovery both physical and mental.

Beyond the physical benefits, kiteboarding offers something equally profound for the mind. The sport demands total presence. In the moments of harnessing wind and navigating water, worries fade away and Veterans find themselves immersed in the here and now. This mindfulness effect helps reduce stress, quiet anxious thoughts, and create space for emotional healing.

Perhaps most importantly, kiteboarding provides connection. Veterans in our retreats experience the sport side by side, surrounded by peers who share their backgrounds and understand their struggles. There is no pressure to talk, yet camaraderie flows naturally in the shared laughter, encouragement, and unspoken understanding on the water. For those who have felt isolated after service, this sense of belonging becomes just as therapeutic as the sport itself.

By offering kiteboarding retreats in destinations like the Outer Banks, Charleston, St. Simons, and the Gulf Coast, Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors creates the perfect setting for Veterans to rediscover strength, joy, and community. The sport becomes more than recreation, it becomes a bridge, helping Warriors move from injury toward strength, from isolation toward belonging, and from service toward a renewed sense of purpose.

SAILING

freedom. focus. connection.

Sailing has long been a symbol of freedom, harnessing nothing but the power of the wind to move forward. For Veterans, the experience of learning to sail offers more than adventure; it is a chance to regain balance, focus, and confidence. The physical demands build strength and coordination, while the mental concentration required provides a natural form of mindfulness. Out on the open water, surrounded by nothing but sky and sea, stress and worry give way to clarity and calm.

For Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors, sailing is essential to our programs because it mirrors the teamwork and camaraderie that Veterans know so well. Crewing a boat requires trust, communication, and shared responsibility, skills deeply rooted in military life. On our retreats across the East Coast, sailing becomes both therapy and connection, helping Warriors rediscover the joy of working as a team while finding healing in the rhythm of the ocean.

FOILING & E-FOILING

elevation. balance. empowerment.

Foiling and e-foiling have transformed water sports by introducing a sensation akin to flight. Foiling, which involves riding a board equipped with a hydrofoil that lifts above the water’s surface, has roots tracing back to the early 20th century. Italian inventor Enrico Forlanini first experimented with hydrofoils in 1906, aiming to reduce drag and increase speed in boats. This concept evolved over decades, with significant contributions from figures like Alexander Graham Bell and Casey Baldwin, who developed the first practical hydrofoil boats in the 1950s.

The modern iteration of foiling, particularly e-foiling, emerged in the 2010s. In 2015, Nick Leason, an engineer and avid surfer, founded Lift Foils in Puerto Rico. He combined advancements from smartphones, electric vehicles, and drones to create the first eFoil, a board powered by an electric motor that allows riders to glide above the water without the need for waves or wind.

Foiling and E-Foiling take the thrill of water sports to a whole new level! The sensation of gliding effortlessly over the surface brings a unique combination of exhilaration and focus.

It’s more than just adrenaline, they are tools for healing. Learning to glide above the waves fosters resilience, concentration, and self-trust, helping Veterans reconnect with their bodies and their inner strength.

WAKESURFING

flow. rhythm. renewal.

Wakesurfing is a modern water sport that evolved from traditional waterskiing and wakeboarding in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Riders use the wake of a boat as their wave, gliding across the water without being directly pulled by the motor. This style of surfing quickly became a global phenomenon, with communities forming around lakes and coastal areas where enthusiasts share techniques, tricks, and a love of the water. The sport emphasizes rhythm, balance, and timing, making every ride a unique challenge and a personal achievement.

For Veterans, wakesurfing offers a powerful combination of physical engagement and mental focus. Riding offers physical benefits (strength, balance, coordination), while the meditative flow of moving with the wave encourages presence and reduces stress. Each ride becomes a moment of freedom, a chance to push past limitations, regain confidence, and reconnect with the joy of the water.

At Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors, wakesurfing is more than recreation; it is a bridge to recovery and community. Veterans share the experience with peers who understand both the physical and emotional challenges of service. By teaching wakesurfing at retreats across the east coast the program offers Veterans an environment where they can heal, grow, and rediscover a sense of empowerment and belonging.
